A new efficient energy from waste solution in Dundee

Making more use of the energy in Dundee and Angus’s residual waste

In November 2017, MVV entered a contract with Dundee City and Angus Councils to manage their residual waste (that is waste left over after recyclable materials have been removed). It is a long-term contract under which MVV will utilise municipal solid waste (MSW), commercial and industrial waste (C&I) to generate electricity. In the process, MVV will endeavour to fulfil the requirements of the Scottish Government’s hierarchical Zero Waste priorities on:

1. reduce
2. reuse
3. recycling
4. recovery (of energy for example)
5. disposal

In November 2020, SEPA approved MEB’s application to vary the environmental permit to allow parallel operation of the old facility and the new energy from waste combined heat and power facility. Collectively, these facilities have created an additional 30 jobs on sites and have a capacity of processing approximately 220,000 tonnes of residual waste per annum.
